We view today’s agreement on the status of Shingal between Iraq’s Federal Government and the Kurdistan Regional Government positively and with optimism. We commend the negotiating teams of both sides for the successful talks and reaching the agreement. This shows mutual commitment, a sense of responsibility, joint efforts, and cooperation among the relevant authorities.

We express our appreciation and congratulations to Prime Minister Mustafa Al-Kadhimi, whose role was crucial and constructive in the success of the talks and finalization of the agreement. We also thank the support and participation of the United Nations Secretary-General’s Special Representative for Iraq, Ms. Jeanine Hennis- Plasschaert, for her efforts to reach today’s agreement. We also offer our appreciation to all parties who made the deal possible through their relentless support.

This agreement is a national step in the right direction and it is in the interest of the entire country. It will lead to restoring and strengthening trust between the Federal Government of Iraq and the Kurdistan Regional Government. We are hopeful that this agreement will be followed by the resolution of all other pending disagreements between the two sides; as well as the peaceful return of all our Yezidi sisters and brothers to Shingal, the restoration of stability, and the start of reconstruction in that area.

We request all sides to commit to the implementation of this agreement. We also urge our international partners to support us rebuild the Shingal area and reconstruct its infrastructure; as this will lead to peace, stability, and social harmony. It will also solidify peaceful coexistence and tolerance among all communities in Shingal.
